William Faircliff was born on 24th May 1920 in Burwell (Newmarket Q2-1920 3B:1011), baptised in Burwell on 12th June 1920 the son of Bertram and Flower Elizabeth FAIRCLIFF (née WATTS), of 16 Newmarket Road, Burwell. His father was a postman.
His parents were still at No 16 Newmarket Road in 1939. His father died in 1952 and his mother then married Thomas LAWRENCE



William was taken prisoner on 15th February 1942, the day of the British surrender to the Japanese in Singapore. "Battalion at War" by Michael Moore says he died of malaria at Tonchan, Thailand. Tonchan is about 80 km north of Kanchanaburi.
